Design House Brings Green to Misa

Started by David Wax and his partner Ben Uyeda, FreeGreen is making green home designs free for everyone. 2005's Solar Decathlon blew us away, but we are fascinated by the amazing Solar House from Cornell University. This team brought home a beautiful zero-energy to the mall in Washington, DC, and has just launched ZeroEnergy Design, home design firm focused on zero-energy design. Continuing their momentum as green home design teacher, two of the Cornell Solar Decathlon team has just launched a new effort that aims to bring green design to the masses through a special innovative business model called FreeGreen.
FreeGreen provides a selection of green home design for free, with a variety of styles from traditional to modern. While the basic design for free, homeowners can take the process further and customize their designs with the cost (and very reasonable) extra. The cost of the design process, and free house plan, kept to a minimum through partnerships between FreeGreen and green building products manufacturer - paid placement from product manufacturers.
As homeowners consult with FreeGreen to design customized, they are introduced to healthy, energy efficient, sustainable products that sponsor FreeGreen's eco-companies. This is a collaborative win-win-win that introduces people to the principles of green building and products and allows consumers on any budget to have a custom-designed, green home.
In the end, FreeGreen is about providing people with options and knowledge to make decisions. Green building products are widely available, but sorting through various options, or even know where to look, is a daunting task for most new homeowners. Freegreen solving this problem by offering a very good green building consulting with little cost to the consumer. According to founder, "is the goal at FreeGreen not produce environmentally friendly home possible but rather to provide a variety of different home plans that allow people to create homes to suit their lifestyles in a responsible and fair."
FreeGreen launched this month began with several great designs including our favorite, The Loft Suburban, modern home suitable for all climates. Marked with an open floor plan and loft ceiling space, this design will be available in various sizes to meet a lot of lifestyle and landscape.
We think FreeGreen is a great idea and a wonderful way to bring information, innovation and green design options for everyone - We are very excited to announce the launch of FreeGreen "because green design should be accessible to all." [Via]

Eco Friendly Garden Furniture

When choosing eco-friendly garden furniture, is it enough for it to be FSC certified? Should we be sticking to local materials or choosing garden furniture made from salvaged or recycled materials?
Is it more sustainable to choose garden furniture made from local materials, or garden furniture made from salvaged wood?
These elegant loungers are made from salvaged teak
The sustainable furniture option does not have to mean compromising on design

The teak will age elegantly over many years to a soft silver grey.
No need to oil, wax or varnish.

Sustainable garden furniture choices can be a minefield as there is no one right answer. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when making your decisions...

1/Buy garden furniture made from locally produced wood

There is no excuse for buying teak furniture (even if it is sustainably forested) when so much environmental damage is done shipping it halfway around the world. Choose English Oak from local managed woodland, or if you must have teak, choose furniture made from salvaged or recycled wood

2/Buy recycled garden furniture, or garden furniture that is made from reclaimed materials

Furniture made from recycled or reclaimed materials is clearly the most sustainable option. Garden Boutique have a great choice of stylish recycled metal garden furniture and wooden furniture made from reclaimed wood. These materials are already in circulation and so have a limited impact on the environment.

3/Avoid oil based paints and stains.
Choose wood that is suitable for outdoor use without treatment such as oak, sweet chestnut, larch, western red cedar or douglas fir. If you must colour your wood, choose water-based products so that any wooden furniture can be recycled or composted at the end of its useful life.

This garden furniture is made from 100% recycled aluminium.

Making this garden furniture reuses waste aluminium and consumes only 5% of the energy needed to produce aluminium from ore.

Small Balcony Ideas

I have a really small balcony (1m x 4m) which faces north and it’s lovely to sit with a cup of coffee, read the paper or munch on a piece of toast in the morning sunshine – if only I could fit! No matter how many different ways I have tried to organise that balcony, it has been a constant decorating challenge. Small tables and chairs always over-crowd the space making it impractical to move around and walk down to the yard - until I discovered the Hanging Balcony Table.

It looked pretty ridiculous online, but for $59.95 it was worth giving it a try. When it arrived, it was a little larger than I thought and solved the problem perfectly. Coupled with a bench seat from IKEA and these cute little pink and scarlet outdoor cushions, I have the perfect place to sit in the mornings to watch the birds and enjoy the sunshine.

Here are a few other small balcony ideas I have uncovered while researching my own little project… Urban Balcony has some great furniture ideas including these ones for small spaces:
Plantation High Bar TableHanging Balcony Table
Burkes Backyard featured a small balcony makeover one episode including converting aluminium toolboxes into bench seats that also double as storage. I’m not too keen on the look personally, but I was originally thinking of having a piece of furniture custom made to fit in this space which could act as a kind of small daybed and storage box at the same time. They also featured another balcony makeoverwhich looks much better including custom designs furniture and wooden deck tiles.

Bathroom Vanity Cabinets

Any design of Bathroom Vanity Cabinets are to consider the use of steam, hot and cold water system in the bathroom. As those three kind of liquids are the most commonly found in a bathroom one use to clean his body. Although it seems to have nothing to do with , it may directly affect Bathroom Vanity Cabinets  performance in the sense of its lifetime and its hygienic.

Bathroom Vanity Cabinets Home Design, Home Interior Design, House Design and Architecture, Interior Design, Minimalist Design, Bedroom Design
Basic rule to notice is that one should spare at least 4 inches rise from the bathroom floor surface before putting Bathroom Vanity Cabinets. This is a must. Most Bathroom Vanity Cabinets start to get damaged starting from their base part. Yes, it is because of water splash and very high floor moisture which is absorbed by the Bathroom Vanity Cabinets porous material. When this happened bacteriae and or rust will grow up and settle in unreachable spots which is impossible to be cleaned then.

For some aesthetical reasons there are designs where one must put his Bathroom Vanity Cabinets directly on the bathroom floor without any concrete bed to lay on. Yes you can do that as long as you are sure your bathroom floor is 100% dry. 5% of moisture is the maximum tolerance you can get for this kind of purpose. Since to build a 100% dry floor surface would require a lot of cost to build. Usually the Bathroom Vanity Cabinets manufacturer or the carpenter you order them from will use the hardest and best quality of wood to anticipate the demand. Plus using the kind of Poly Urethane surface protection to make it last long.

The only thing is most bathroom will use ceramic tiles at its floor and walls. As we understand there are grout lines all over the floor surface so indeed the Bathroom Vanity Cabinets are still exposed to water in some way. Nothing is perfect and above mentioned is the best thing one can do to fulfill his dream bathroom lay out. To arrange a short meeting between you, your designer and your contractor is the best way to do prior to the work.

There is possibility to invite another contractor who do waterproofing job. Your Bathroom Vanity Cabinets lifetime will depend on his work indeed. The remaining 5% tolerance of floor moisture is a result of naturally never ending condensation process. Particularly when your bathroom environment bears a hot humid air then condensation must be handled by proper experienced contractor.

Balcony Needs to be Designed

Balcony needs to be designed in such a way that it ensures the safety of your child. This wrought iron balcony grille by Madeley Designs is made as per the safety norms. The gaps are also not too big which protects your child from slipping down: coz children generally tend to play most of the times in the balcony as it gives them a wider space and also coz they find it very interesting to climb up the iron bars. Modern Furniture for Children by Tolix

French company Tolix has relaunched their line of furniture for children. Tolix’s furniture collection is made from metal sheets, which gives the feeling that it will be cold and industrial-like but it’s actually the exact opposite.  The pieces have beautiful curves and gorgeous splashes of colors really modernise and warm the pieces up.

Home Design Ideas - Split the Garage!

At Larson Brenner Architects I am currently working a client on a new home design to be constructed in Rochester, MN.  Here we have run into a very common dilemma.  What to do with 3 1/2 cars worth of garage?

If you put all of that garage to the side of the house you get one very wide plan.  If you put all of that garage forward of the house you get one very deep plan.  Many lots cannot accommodate either one of those plan arrangements.  So what I have proposed to do here is to split the garages into two separate structures.  The main two car garage is directly connected to the house via the mudroom zone.  The additional 1 1/2 car garage is placed on the opposite side of the lot; resulting in a nifty little entry court.  See sketches below.

Here you can see a birds eye view of the layout.  Notice the roof between the garage and house is low.  This helps to reduce the mass of the house.  Pulling the garages a bit forward of the front porch creates a nifty little courtyard.

So when you develop your next house plan - please think about the impact of that garage and look for creative solutions.

Villa Nielsen is designed by Willa Nordic. It’s located at the forest edge and features large glass batches that not only frame awesome nature views from the inside but also grants the house a majestic look. The dramatic exterior also features generous terraces that help to catch as much Nordic light as possible. The golden brown color theme blends very well with the nature that surrounds the house. The interior continue the theme but with addition more modern white color. Thanks to that it feels very cozy and classic but looks as a modern one. It’s always filled with natural light that highlight stylish furniture. During summers the boundaries between indoors and outdoors disappear and the family is able to enjoy holiday-like lifestyle.
